magicui-flickering-grid

background-effectdark-futuristicmotion on file

A client-side React canvas background that randomly flickers a configurable grid of squares. It ships as a shadcn registry component, sizes itself with resize and intersection observers, pauses when out of view, and relies on a local cn utility backed by clsx and tailwind-merge plus Tailwind utility classes.

Verdict

A solid ambient effect for React and Tailwind projects, with clean mounting and no reported accessibility violations in the configured harness. It needs a shadcn-style setup because the bare component cannot resolve its local utility import. Check narrow containers and add a reduced-motion strategy before broad use.

Use it if

  • You need an ambient animated grid behind a hero, card, or dashboard panel.
  • Your React app already uses Tailwind and the shadcn-style cn utility.
  • You want control over grid spacing, color, opacity, flicker frequency, and canvas dimensions.

Skip it if

  • Your narrow layout cannot tolerate overflow without an additional responsive wrapper or sizing adjustment.
  • You need animation that automatically respects reduced-motion preferences.
  • You want a static CSS background with no continuous canvas rendering.
  • Your project renders without browser-only canvas and observer APIs.

In a non-shadcn project, add clsx and tailwind-merge, create a compatible cn helper, and either configure the local import alias or replace that import with a relative path. Tailwind must provide the sizing and pointer-event utilities. Run it as a client component in an environment with canvas, ResizeObserver, and IntersectionObserver support.
