Verdict

A focused primitive that works well when its children already provide the interaction semantics. The clean harness result is encouraging, but it needs a shadcn-style setup because the bare project cannot resolve the expected local utility import.

Use it if

  • You want one animated highlight to move between buttons, tabs, filters, or navigation choices.
  • Your React interface already uses Motion and Tailwind utilities.
  • You want click selection or a pointer-hover preview with a change callback.

Skip it if

  • You need a controlled value prop rather than internal active-state management.
  • You need tab semantics, keyboard navigation, focus management, or selection ARIA built into the component.
  • You do not want the Motion dependency for a small highlight effect.
  • You need hover behavior that works equivalently for touch and keyboard users without adaptation.

In a non-shadcn project, install Motion, provide a cn class-merging helper, and either configure the at-sign source alias for the expected utility path or rewrite that import.
