magicui-border-beam

hover-effectgradient-glowmotion on file

A client-side React overlay that sends a gradient beam around the inherited border radius of a positioned container. It ships as a shadcn registry component, uses Motion for the looping path animation, and expects Tailwind utility support plus the local cn helper backed by clsx and tailwind-merge.

Verdict

A focused, flexible accent that builds and mounts cleanly in its intended environment. It needs a shadcn-style setup as provided, because the bare project cannot resolve the expected local utility helper. Best used sparingly where perpetual motion earns attention.

Use it if

  • You want a decorative animated edge on cards, panels, or callouts.
  • Your app already uses the shadcn utility layout and Tailwind conventions.
  • You need configurable colors, direction, timing, and transition behavior.

Skip it if

  • Your project avoids continuous motion or needs a built-in reduced-motion fallback.
  • You do not use Tailwind and do not want to translate its mask and gradient utilities.
  • Adding Motion for a decorative border is not worth the dependency cost.
  • The target container cannot be positioned and clipped for an absolute overlay.

In a non-shadcn project, add Motion, Tailwind, clsx, and tailwind-merge; create a cn utility or replace that call; configure the alias used by the import; and ensure the required mask, gradient, arbitrary-property, and client-component syntax is supported. Add your own reduced-motion treatment if needed.
