Measured entry
shadcn-hover-card
A copy-in React hover card built on Radix UI primitives. It ships as a client component with root, trigger, and portalled content wrappers, and relies on the radix-ui package, a local cn helper, Tailwind utility classes, theme tokens, and animation utilities.

What the harness recorded
BARE BUILD
✗ Build failed in 32.27s error during build: [vite:load-fallback] Could not load <sandbox>/src/lib/utils (imported by src/cut/components/ui/hover-card.tsx): ENOENT: no such file or directory, open '<sandbox>/src/lib/utils'
Verdict
A sound choice for an existing shadcn-style interface: it builds, mounts, and keeps Radix behavior easy to customize. It needs a shadcn-style setup and does not work as a bare drop-in because the local utility import and styling conventions must exist.
Use it if
- You need a compact preview panel that opens from a link or profile trigger.
- Your app already uses the shadcn utility, theme-token, and Tailwind conventions.
- You want Radix to handle the trigger, portal, placement, and open-state behavior while keeping the wrapper editable.
Skip it if
- You only need a short text hint, where a tooltip is the clearer pattern.
- Your product is primarily touch-driven and has no dependable hover interaction.
- You do not want to adopt or translate shadcn Tailwind classes, theme tokens, and animation utilities.
- You need a self-contained package with no project-local utility import.
Install
| Declared dependencies | radix-ui |
|---|---|
| Missing on install | none |
| Bare install | fails once the shadcn-style helpers are removed, so it needs that setup |
| Provider | no provider required in the harness |
In a non-shadcn project, add React and the radix-ui package, provide a compatible cn class-merging helper or replace that import, configure Tailwind, define the popover and border theme tokens, and include utilities for the state and directional animations used by the content.
